The Dovado 3GN Router [rear view]

The Dovado 3GN - sold out, no longer in production

The 3GN was launched by Dovado in the latter part of 2009. Like its "big brother" the 4GR and the UMR before it, the Dovado 3GN provides a simple and stable way of sharing the internet connection from a mobile broadband USB modem via standard ethernet and wireless networking.

Flexible and future-proof

  • Connects to mobile broadband via USB modem
  • Supports 3G/HSPA+ USB modems including the next generation of 21Mbps modems and beyond
  • Share your mobile broadband connection via standard wireless (b/g/n) or ethernet networking (4 LAN ports)
  • Use it with any operator, anywhere at anytime.
  • Use mobile broadband as backup (failover) for fixed line broadband or vice versa
  • View connection statistics available on Connection Status Overview bar
  • Keep alive your internet connection with the Connection Tracker.
  • Regular firmware releases for cool new features and support for the latest USB modems

SMS-based features (if supported by modem)

  • Receive text alerts about monthly data consumption.
  • Control your 3GN via SMS (Restart, Connect, Disconnect, Status)
  • Receive SMS notifications of changes to your Internet connection (including link fail-over).

Hardware Interfaces

  • 1 x USB2.0 port (for USB modem)
  • 4 x 10/100Mbps Ethernet LAN ports
  • 1 x 10/100Mbps Ethernet WAN port
  • 802.11b/g/n (draft N) 150Mbps WLAN Access Point
  • 100-240VAC, 50/60Hz, power switching adapter
  • 12VDC, 1A power adapter jack socket
  • 1 x 3dBi fixed dipole WiFi antenna

3GN vs UMR: what are the differences?

  • The 3GN supports the faster 802.11n wireless networking protocol in addition to the 802.11b and 802.11g protocols supported by the UMR.
  • The 3GN can accommodate faster modems which offer download speeds of 21Mbps and beyond
  • The 3GN only has 1 USB port, so its functionality is dedicated to sharing your mobile broadband - it has none of the home automation or GPS features of the UMR
  • The 3GN has a fixed 3dBi dipole WiFi antenna compared to the detachable 4dBi antenna on the UMR. This means that you cannot connect a higher gain antenna to boost your WiFi coverage with the 3GN. Alternative solutions to extend the WiFi coverage of the 3GN might include:
    • dropping the wireless protocol down to 802.11b which penetrates further
    • or using an additional wireless access point (in repeater mode) to extend your range
  • The 3GN is smaller than the UMR and is purple as opposed to black.

IMPORTANT: ensure you have a satisfactory 3G service before buying

Mobile broadband coverage is (and always will be) extremely variable. So please ensure you have a satisfactory 3G service from your chosen provider in your intended location before purchasing your Dovado 3GN. We strongly recommend that customers:

  1. already possess a working USB modem (billpay or prepay) and
  2. are satisfied with the speed of their existing mobile broadband service

Check that your USB modem is supported by the Dovado 3GN

There is a list of supported modems at http://www.dovado.com/modems.

What's in the box?

  1. the Dovado 3GN
  2. an Ireland/UK-compatible power supply
  3. a reference manual / quick setup guide (check online for updated reference manual)

If time permits we will upgrade your router with the lastest firmware. A USB modem is NOT included!

Internal Features

Initial configuration - Access Point Names

When you get your Dovado 3GN, simply insert your USB modem into the USB port on the front and power up the router. Follow the instructions in the User Guide booklet to gain access to the configuration screen from a web browser. The configuration is platform-independent - you can run the initial configuration wizard from Windows, MacOS, Linux or even a wireless-enabled mobile phone or iPod touch.

The only difficult information required by the configuration wizard is the Access Point Name (APN) for your USB modem. In Ireland, the following APNs are in use:

  • 02 - open.internet
  • Three - 3ireland.ie (billpay)
  • Three - 3internet (prepay)
  • Meteor - isp.mymeteor.ie
  • Vodafone - hs.vodafone.ie
  • Vodafone - internet

Ultimately you can discover the correct Access Point Name by viewing the default profile provided with the software that comes pre-installed on the USB modem.
